Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 12, 2026. This page covers the English Me Chrome add-on and this website. Plain language first, details below.
No account. No selling data. Your text stays yours.
- ✓No sign-up, no account, no email required to use the add-on.
- ✓Text you type is corrected on your device when Chrome's built-in on-device model is available — it never leaves your computer.
- ✓Text is only sent over the network when you use a cloud writing style or your device can't run the on-device model — and it goes straight to our AI provider, OpenRouter, not to a server we run.
- ✓We don't operate a backend that stores what you type. There's nothing for us to lose, sell, or hand over.
- ✓Your settings and API key are stored locally in Chrome on your device, not on our servers.
- ✓No ad tracking, no analytics that follow you across sites, nothing sold to third parties.
What we collect, and why
The text you correct or translate
English Me proofreads sentences from the side panel you open — nothing is read from the pages you browse. Where your text goes depends on which engine handles the request:
- On-device (default when available): Chrome's built-in AI model runs locally in your browser. Your text is never transmitted anywhere.
- Cloud (when you pick a writing style like Formal or Academic, or your device can't run the on-device model): your text is sent directly to OpenRouter, the AI routing service we use, over an encrypted connection, solely to generate the correction or translation. We don't log or store a copy of it ourselves — we have no server in the middle to do so.
Your settings and API key
Your OpenRouter API key (if you add your own), chosen model, writing-style preference, translation-language preference, per-site on/off state, and correction-sensitivity setting are all saved using Chrome's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local) directly on your device. This data is never synced to us and isn't accessible to English Me — only to the extension running on your own machine, and to OpenRouter when your key is used to authenticate a request you make.
Error diagnostics (beta only)
While the add-on is in beta, if something breaks we may send a bare error report — an error message, HTTP status code, model name, a stack trace from our own code, and the extension version — to our error-tracking tool, Sentry. We deliberately never include the text you typed in these reports. This diagnostic reporting is a beta-only measure and is planned to be removed once the add-on leaves beta.
What we don't collect
No account or email signup, no browsing history, no page content from sites you visit, no advertising identifiers, and no analytics that track you across sites. This website (englishmeapp.com) does not run any third-party analytics or ad-tracking scripts.
Permissions the add-on asks for
Storage
Lets the add-on save your settings and API key locally in Chrome, so you don't have to re-enter them every time.
Side panel
Lets the add-on show its editor UI in Chrome's side panel. It does not grant access to the content of the tab you're viewing.
Network access (limited)
Scoped to exactly two domains: openrouter.ai (to process corrections/translations) and sentry.io (beta error reporting). The add-on cannot reach any other site.
Third-party services we use
OpenRouter
Processes the text you submit for cloud correction/translation, under its own privacy policy at openrouter.ai. We don't control what OpenRouter or the underlying model provider retains — check their policy if you want details on their side.
Sentry
Receives beta-only error diagnostics (never your typed text) under its own privacy policy at sentry.io. This integration is removed once the add-on leaves beta.
Data retention & your control
We don't run a backend, so there's no English Me database of your text to retain or delete. Your local settings and API key live in Chrome until you remove them yourself (via the options page) or uninstall the add-on, which clears them. Any text sent to OpenRouter is retained only per OpenRouter's own policy, not ours.
Children's privacy
English Me is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Meaningful changes to how your data is handled will be reflected here before they take effect.
